‘Naila and the Uprising’
When a nation-wide uprising breaks out in 1987, a woman in Gaza must make a choice between love, family and freedom. Undaunted, she embraces all three, joining a clandestine network of women in a movement that forces the world to recognize the Palestinian right to self-determination for the first time. Directed by Julia Bacha, a Peabody award-winning filmmaker, Naila and the Uprising chronicles the remarkable journey of Naila Ayesh whose story weaves through the most vibrant, nonviolent mobilization in Palestinian history – the First Intifada in the late 1980s.
Using evocative under-camera animation, intimate interviews, and exclusive archival footage, this film brings out of anonymity the courageous women who shook the Israeli occupation and put Palestinians on the map for the first time. Most images of the First Intifada paint an incomplete picture from a law-and-order frame. This film tells the story that history overlooked – of an unbending nonviolent women’s movement at the head of Palestine’s struggle for freedom.

Join us for the first of a series of 3 traditional Palestinian dance workshop with a local Dabke dancer, part of the Hawwiya Dance Company that has performed in the UK and around Europe. Hawiyya Community Dance is an organisation with a mission - to raise voices of the oppressed, share their struggles in solidarity and appreciate the culture.
Beginners most welcome. Look forward to seeing you!

Thursday 25th September - Tarrez Tatreez
Our monthly tatreez embroidery sessions are back!
'Tarrez tatreez' is a monthly get-together where we embroider in solidarity with the people of Palestine.
You are welcome to bring your own project and materials and embroider away. Or you can learn tatreez: the traditional cross stitching of Palestinian motifs (materials available for a nominal price of £5)
We will also be starting a communal embroidery project where we'll collectively embroider on one single fabric.

Friday 17th October - West Kent Branch Art Auction
Please save the date and join us for a special Charity Art Auction showcasing the work of both established and emerging UK and Palestinian artists, in support of Hope and Play, a UK-based charity dedicated to helping children and their families in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon. This inspiring evening will feature not only exceptional art for auction, but also poetry performances, a short film screening, and a heartfelt talk from a Hope and Play volunteer, offering a powerful glimpse into the impact of the charity’s work. All proceeds will go directly to supporting vital projects that provide education, play, and healing to children affected by conflict and displacement.
Tickets for the event are £25 per person and include a welcome drink and delicious bites to eat—all profits raised will go directly towards providing education, play, and support to the children and their families.
Digital tickets will go on sale in September with details of the art auction which will be listed online and open for bids a month before the auction event evening.
